Last night just before 10pm, crews were alerted to a structure fire in the 4800 block of Smallwood Church Road. Engine 83, Engine 82, Rescue Squad 8, Tanker 8, Brush 84, Chief 8, Chief 8A, Chief 8B, and Duty 8 all responded. Chief 8 arrived to find a single family dwelling with a well advanced fire. Engine 83 arrived and began exterior suppression. Due to the heavy fire involvement and structural collapse, all crews operated on the exterior only. Crews worked for just over four hours on the scene. A tanker shuttle was maintained for the duration of the incident, which at the peak included 12 tankers. Crews from NDW Stations 20 and 21, RS7 (Potomac Heights), Tower 9 (Indian Head), Engine 41 and RE4 (Nanjemoy) Engine 112 and RE11 (Bryans Road) all operated on the incident scene. Engine 11 (LaPlata) handled the tanker fill site. Due to deep-seated fire that wasn’t safe to access without heavy machinery, our crews and apparatus maintained a presence on scene until just after noon today ensuring all the hotspots were contained. The cause of the fire is under investigation. |
